Esther McVey has been appointed the new Secretary of State for Work & Pensions. She has replaced David Gauke who has moved to the Justice Department after only a few months in post.
A former daytime television presenter, Esther McVey became unpopular during her previous time in the Department of Work & Pensions (DWP) for justifying harsh cuts to benefits for disabled people. She also helped with the introduction of the Personal Independence Payment (PIP). She was a prominent defender of the system of benefit sanctions, the spread of food banks and the flexibility of zero-hour contracts.
Sarah Newton MP is still the Minister of State for Disabled People, Health & Work at the DWP. Esther McVey is her boss. If you look at her voting record, Sarah Newton has consistently voted for a reduction in spending on welfare benefits. She has generally voted against laws to promote equality and human rights.
